Innovative Air Bubble Technology Powers Post-Panamax Bulk Carrier to Lower Emissions

Oct 30, 2014 10:13

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has proudly announced the successful delivery of the MV Harvest Frost, marking a significant milestone as the first of three post-panamax bulk carriers utilizing a pioneering air bubble lubrication system for enhanced energy efficiency. This groundbreaking vessel is equipped with the proprietary Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which notably decreases the drag between the hull and seawater by generating a stream of air bubbles from the ship's underwater structure. According to MHI, the implementation of this advanced system has enabled the MV Harvest Frost to surpass initial expectations, achieving an impressive 27% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to traditional bulk carriers, outperforming the goal of a 25% reduction. Delivered to ADM Harvest Shipping, a branch of the renowned Archer Daniels Midland Company, the MV Harvest Frost was completed at the shipyard of MHI’s licensing partner, Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., located in Nagasaki, Japan. MHI was heavily involved in the vessel’s conceptual design, incorporating various eco-friendly technologies including the revolutionary MALS. In addition to the MALS, the MV Harvest Frost features a newly designed bow shape that minimizes water resistance and shallow draught facilities that aid in realizing the target energy savings. Furthermore, the ship’s propulsion system showcases an innovative approach that optimally transforms the main engine power into effective propulsion power, with strategically placed fins in front of the propellers and specialized grooves in the propeller boss cap, as detailed by MHI.
