Bulk Carrier Grounds on Amazon River: HB Tucunaré Encounteres Unexpected Sandbar
On October 13, 2019, the bulk carrier 'HB Tucunaré' found itself grounded on a sandbar in the northern reaches of the Amazon River. The vessel was on its way from Porto Trombetas to the port of Vila do Conde, carrying a hefty load of 74,000 tons of bauxite, and operating with a draft of 11.58 meters. This unforeseen incident occurred near the Curuá Canal, where the sandbar had not been marked on existing nautical charts. Fortunately, no structural damage was reported to the vessel. The 'HB Tucunaré' departed Porto Trombetas with practitioners on board around 11:30 p.m. on October 11. By 12:30 a.m. on October 13, the practitioners had disembarked in Macapá, and the ship continued its journey until it eventually became lodged in the Curuá Canal, approximately 30 kilometers from Bailique Island.
