Husum Port Incident: Helene G Strikes Flood Barrier
On the evening of November 1, 2018, the vessel 'Helene G' experienced a significant allision while departing from Husum port. The incident occurred shortly after the ship set sail at 6:40 PM, when a technical malfunction caused a failure in the propeller control system. This unexpected issue resulted in the propeller adjusting its angle improperly, propelling the ship forward at an increased speed rather than slowing it down as intended. Despite the captain's swift decision to initiate emergency anchoring, the 'Helene G' collided with the flood barrier, causing substantial damage to its bow. In addition, the adjacent pump station also sustained severe damage. Following the allision, the 'Helene G' returned to Husum Shipyard, where it had been docked since October 18. After repairs were conducted, the vessel ultimately departed on November 12 at 2:50 PM, en route to Amsterdam, with an estimated arrival date of November 14.
Cargo Spill from Helene G Washes Ashore Near Klaipeda
On February 14, 2018, beachgoers near Klaipeda made an unexpected discovery when various cargo items washed ashore. The items, including several refrigerators and pieces of furniture, originated from the cargo ship "Helene G," which experienced an overboard loss on January 29 at 10:40 PM in position 55°39.2'N, 20°35'E. The "Helene G" was en route from Hull to Klaipeda at the time and was carrying a total of 12 mobile homes on deck. Unfortunately, inclement weather led to seven of these mobile homes being lost into the sea. After safely discharging the remaining cargo in Klaipeda on January 30, the vessel continued its journey. This incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by maritime transport and the potential environmental impacts of lost cargo.
