On November 11, 2016, a significant fire incident occurred aboard the bulk carrier 'Top Trader', which has been docked at Jose Terminal in Puerto La Cruz since October 28, 2016, for the loading of petcoke. The vessel was in the process of receiving its cargo from the state-run oil company PDVSA when crew members detected burning petroleum coke in three of its cargo holds. Efforts to extinguish the flames with water proved unsuccessful. Authorities may request an inspection to assess any potential damage to the ship's structure caused by the burning cargo. The fire, identified earlier in the week, led to a suspension of Venezuela's petcoke exports. At the time of the incident, 'Top Trader' had already loaded approximately 22,000 tonnes of its planned 49,000 tonnes of coke destined for Europe. However, the captain has yet to receive clearance from the insurance company and broker to proceed with the voyage, given the hazardous state of the cargo.
