In an unusual turn of events, the cable ship H.P. Lading, identified by IMO number 8646484, is currently engaged in an underwater operation off the coasts of Gedser, Denmark, and Rostock, Germany. This month, the vessel is tasked with retrieving a 40-kilometer long undersea cable named Kontek from the seabed. Originally laid in the mid-1990s, this cable was part of the pioneering high-voltage connection between Eastern Denmark and Germany. Unfortunately, issues with the cable connectors prompted the decision to replace it in favor of a more reliable system, which began operation in late 2010. During this recovery mission, the dedicated crew of H.P. Lading is meticulously cutting the old cable into segments ranging from 5 to 7 kilometers, ensuring to seal the ends to prevent any loss of oil contained within the cable. Once retrieved, the old cable is wound onto the vessel's turntable and will ultimately be sent to a recycling facility, where the metals will be salvaged.
