Ferry Møysalen Disabled at Sea Following Engine Room Smoke Incident
On October 26, 2012, at 11 a.m., the ferry 'Møysalen' encountered a critical situation while sailing in the Berfjord when smoke was detected emanating from its engine room. The crew promptly notified the Rescue Coordination Centre of Northern Norway through Bodø radio. The smoke was caused by a short circuit within the engine, prompting the crew to halt operations, leaving the 'Møysalen' adrift in the face of strong northeast winds. Emergency services, including fire and ambulance teams, were dispatched to the scene. Fortunately, the situation did not warrant an evacuation of the vessel, which was operating on the route connecting Sandnessjøen, Dønna, and Løkta at the time of the incident. At 1:30 p.m., the 'Møysalen' was successfully towed by two tugboats, including the 'Boa Tyr', and was subsequently docked in Sandnessjøen with assistance from 'Helgeland' and 'Thorolf Kveldulfson'. Onboard, there were two passengers and a crew of seven, none of whom suffered injuries during the ordeal. Additionally, two vehicles were aboard the ferry. The operator, Boreal, has since commenced an assessment of the engine damage. Following the incident, the ferry 'Vefsna' was deployed to continue operations on the affected route.
