On July 25, 2024, a distress signal was received from the 45-foot yacht 'Espiritu' approximately 230 miles northeast of Palmyra Atoll. The Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) watchstanders initiated a SafetyNet broadcast, searched the AMVER database, and dispatched the wood chip carrier 'HK Challenger' to assist the stranded vessel. The crew of 'HK Challenger' traveled about 120 miles to supply fuel and essential provisions to the man and woman aboard 'Espiritu'. The situation took a turn on July 27, 2024, when the JRCC in Honolulu once again received an EPIRB alert associated with the 'Espiritu'. This time, the device's coordinates placed it within the territorial waters of the Republic of Kiribati. JRCC promptly relayed this information to the local search and rescue coordinator, who mobilized a response to locate the distressed yacht. Unfortunately, Kiribati officials were unable to find 'Espiritu' during their initial search. On July 28, the U.S. Coast Guard stepped in to support the Republic of Kiribati in their efforts to locate the vessel, particularly near Tabuaeran, also known as Fanning Island. The JRCC received a formal request from Kiribati SAR coordinators at 10 a.m., leading to an aerial search in the remote, less populated eastern side of Tabuaeran. Two local vessels were deployed to assist in the investigation. An HC-130J Super Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point launched at 2 p.m. and successfully located 'Espiritu' at 6:56 p.m., dropping vital supplies and a radio on the beach near the stricken vessel. The yacht was found severely damaged and aground on the eastern side of Fanning Island. Local authorities, including the Tabuaeran Island Police, were on hand to assist the castaways.
