HMAS Canberra's Radar Disrupts Internet Services in Taranaki

Jun 06, 2025 13:34

On June 4, 2025, a significant internet disruption occurred across parts of Taranaki, attributed to the navigation radar of the HMAS 'Canberra'. As the naval vessel navigated its way towards Wellington, its radar emitted signals that interfered with WiFi connections not only in Taranaki but also extended to the Marlborough region. Affected internet service providers (ISPs) included local network provider Primo, which experienced a notable drop of 5 GHz wireless communications starting at approximately 2 a.m. In response to the situation, the HMAS 'Canberra' promptly altered its radar frequencies, which successfully resolved the interference issues without any lingering complications. Other affected ISPs included Inspire Net Ltd and TPNet NZ, both of which experienced disruptions due to the radar interference. Additionally, the incident had repercussions for BrianFM, a radio station based in Blenheim on New Zealand's South Island, prompting them to switch to a contingency plan to maintain their live broadcast amidst the connectivity challenges. Fortunately, the situation was rectified relatively quickly, and services were restored soon after the frequency adjustments were made.

Australian Navy Divers Assist in Salvage of Sunken Fishing Boat in Vanuatu

Mar 17, 2023 11:35

In a remarkable joint effort, Royal Australian Navy clearance divers from HMAS Canberra have teamed up with the Vanuatu Fisheries Department (VFD) to recover a fishing vessel named Scabra, which tragically sunk due to the severe impact of Tropical Cyclones Judy and Kevin. The Scabra, a locally constructed timber boat, was found partially submerged near the RVS Mala Base wharf in Port Vila Harbour, creating a navigational hazard for other ships in the busy waterway. To mitigate risks, the divers collaborated closely with VFD personnel to safely lift the sunken vessel using lift bags and strategically pump out water with a submersible pump. Once the boat was adequately buoyed, it was hauled onto a trailer for transport, ensuring it would no longer pose a threat to maritime navigation. Originally built in Vanuatu's fisheries boat yard located on the island of Espiritu Santo, the Scabra will undergo repairs following its recovery. In addition to this salvage operation, the team of 11 divers has been conducting detailed inspections of vessels in the harbour as part of tasks assigned by Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office (NDMO). Their efforts also include comprehensive underwater surveys and clearance of major wharves aimed at enhancing maritime safety. Moving forward, the divers are set to commence a thorough examination of the harbour’s navigational markers as part of their ongoing commitment to ensure safety for all maritime activities in the area.
