MV Arikun Runs Aground Near Cebu: Crew Safe and Environmental Impact Minimal

Aug 03, 2019 13:51

The MV Arikun grounded off the Lauis Ledge Light House in Talisay City, Cebu, on August 3, 2019, around 7 a.m. Fortunately, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) divers, alongside the Marine Environmental Protection Unit, reported no signs of an oil spill from the vessel, which had incurred only minor scratches to its hull. The inspection performed by the Special Operations Unit in Central Visayas (SOU-CV) confirmed that the ship's structural integrity remained largely intact. All 18 crew members aboard, hailing from China, Vietnam, and Myanmar, emerged unscathed in the incident. The ship, carrying a substantial cargo of 4,120 tons of wheat, had recently stopped at the ports of Davao City before heading to Cebu, where it was slated to dock at the Cebu International Port (CIP). By 11 a.m., the MV Arikun was successfully towed to the Talisay City port and secured in the Talisay anchorage area for additional inspections by divers. As a precautionary measure, the vessel's captain was instructed to complete a deficiency report prior to the ship’s resumption of sailing. For more details and photos about this incident, refer to the reports from Cebu Daily News and SunStar.
