On April 4, 2011, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) named 'Hydra' deployed by the research vessel 'Alucia' made significant progress in uncovering the wreckage of the ill-fated Air France flight AF 447, which tragically went down over the Atlantic on June 1, 2009, claiming the lives of all 228 individuals onboard. Following three previous unsuccessful attempts to locate the debris, the ROV has successfully identified wreck parts at a depth of nearly 4,000 meters. The recovery of the wreckage is anticipated to occur within the next three to four weeks, reigniting hopes that the flight recorder may still be recovered. Flight AF 447 was on a scheduled route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris when it encountered severe storm conditions, leading to the failure of critical instruments, including speedometers. While the exact cause of the accident continues to remain elusive, the search efforts have already uncovered 51 bodies shortly after the disaster. The ROV captured detailed images of various components, including engines, tires, and other important debris. Notably, one of the ROVs involved in this mission was developed by the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM GEOMAR) located in Kiel, Germany. The ongoing investigations aim not only to recover the aircraft's significant remains but also to provide answers to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating incident.
