Final Two Trucks Cleared from Hypatia de Alejandría After Storm Incident
On September 12, the last two of four toppled trucks were successfully righted aboard the 'Hypatia de Alejandría', facilitating the unloading of 38 trailers and various vehicles that had been trapped on the car deck. The unfortunate incident occurred early on September 11, during a fierce storm that produced waves reaching 6 to 7 meters, causing damage to approximately 40 vehicles on the vessel. After the challenging operation, the 'Hypatia de Alejandría' departed from the Dique del Oeste at 6:40 p.m. and made its way to Barcelona, reaching the city at 12:40 a.m. The ferry operator faced criticism for insufficiently securing the trucks and for navigating the ferry into such perilous conditions. Onboard were 253 passengers, as well as 75 cars and 77 trucks, with the overturned trucks designated for Alcúdia. Stormy Weather Causes Trucks to Topple on Ferry Near Mallorca
On the night of September 10, 2019, a severe storm impacted travel on the ferry 'Hypatia de Alejandría' as it sailed north of Mallorca. While operating on the Barcelona-Alcúdia-Ciutadella route, the ferry experienced turbulent conditions that resulted in several vehicles, including three trucks, being thrown overboard. After the incident, the ferry proceeded to Palma, where it arrived at 6:30 a.m. on September 11 at the Multipurpose Terminal in the eastern port of the city. Crews worked throughout the day to unload the damaged vehicles, and efforts were underway to recover the overturned trucks and handle their spilled cargo. Passengers needing to reach Menorca were offered alternative travel options via the fast ferry 'Jaume III,' which departed from Alcúdia at 9:00 a.m. Baleària, the ferry operator, expressed regret over the disruption caused to both passengers and cargo customers. For the time being, the 'Hypatia de Alejandría' remained docked at the Multipurpose Terminal. Baleària Launches HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA Service to Enhance Connectivity in Ciutadella
Baleària has officially launched its liquefied natural gas (LNG) ro-pax vessel, HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA, on the pivotal Barcelona-Alcúdia-Ciutadella route. This new service significantly strengthens the connections between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands, while also enhancing inter-island transport within the archipelago. This development is especially beneficial for Menorca, the second-largest island in the Balearics with a population nearing 90,000. Notably, HYPATIA DE ALEJANDRÍA marks a historic milestone as the largest ro-pax vessel to ever berth at the Port of Ciutadella, located at the western tip of Menorca. The vessel's inauguration necessitated meticulous preparations, including the acquisition of a specialized tugboat. To facilitate her operations in Ciutadella, Baleària made a strategic investment in the newly constructed tug ROLON PLATA II from Damen Shipyards Group, purchased in late June.
