Shipping Activity Resumes as Four Vessels Depart from Ukrainian Black Sea Ports
On October 27, 2023, four vessels successfully departed from Ukraine's Black Sea ports located in the Odesa region, marking the resumption of shipping activities via a newly established export corridor after a temporary halt of three days. The ships, identified as 'Propus', 'Iasos', 'Gloria G', and 'Manassa Queen', navigated from the ports of Odesa, while additional vessels including the tanker 'Mavka', bulk carrier 'Golden Arrow', and cargo ship 'Maranta' were en route to Ukrainian ports during this time. Concerns regarding maritime safety had arisen on October 26, when reports from Kiev-based consultancy Barva Invest, British security firm Ambrey, and Ukrainian Ports indicated a suspension of corridor use due to potential threats from Russian aircraft and naval mines. However, Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, firmly refuted these claims, emphasizing the corridor's continued operational status despite the existing threats. This export corridor has become crucial for Ukraine, especially in light of the suspension of the UN agreement that previously facilitated food exports amidst ongoing conflict with Russia. As of October 26, 23 vessels were actively loading at the Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi ports. To date, a total of 51 ships have utilized this corridor, successfully exporting over 1.3 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products and various other cargo.
