Urgent Medivac Operation from Cargo Ship Ilka Near Newhaven
In an impressive display of maritime emergency response, the Newhaven Lifeboat was deployed on June 14, 2013, to facilitate the medical evacuation of a crew member aboard the cargo ship "Ilka." The alarm was raised at 1 p.m. when the captain, sailing towards Waterford, reached out to Solent Coastguard to report a crew member exhibiting severe symptoms of suspected shingles. The Newhaven Lifeboat crew swiftly launched the Severn Class Lifeboat "David and Elizabeth Acland" to assist. By 1:20 p.m., the 56-year-old crew member was successfully transferred to the lifeboat. After receiving immediate care from the lifeboat personnel, he was transported to the lifeboat station where he was prepared for further medical evaluation. An ambulance was on standby to take him to the hospital for additional treatment, ensuring he received the necessary care without delay.
