The Ilshin-Green-Iris: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

In a groundbreaking achievement for the maritime industry, the ‘Ilshin Green Iris’ has officially been delivered as the globe's inaugural LNG-fuelled bulk carrier. Built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea, this innovative vessel was commissioned by Ilshin Logistics. The project, which was first unveiled in July 2016, marks a significant leap towards sustainable shipping by creating a new class of environmentally-friendly bulk carriers powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The bulk carrier features a MAN B&W 6G50ME-GI two-stroke engine and boasts a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 50,000. Demonstrating its commitment to safety and compliance, the Ilshin Green Iris has received verification in accordance with the International Gas Fuel (IGF) Code from both Lloyds Register and the Korean Register. In its inaugural service, the Ilshin Green Iris will be chartered by major steel manufacturer POSCO, tasked with transporting limestone across the Korean coastal trade routes. This venture not only represents a technological milestone but also reinforces efforts toward greener shipping solutions.

In a significant milestone for the maritime industry, South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, in conjunction with POSCO, held the launch ceremony for the Green Iris today at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan. This innovative vessel stands as the nation’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered merchant ship and is expected to redefine bulk shipping capabilities worldwide. Boasting an impressive 50,000-tonne cargo capacity, the Green Iris will rank among the largest bulk carriers globally. The state-of-the-art bulker is equipped with a LNG fuel tank constructed from POSCO's specialized high-manganese steel, designed to endure frigid temperatures as low as -196 degrees Celsius. The ship is primed for its inaugural journey in January, set to transport limestone between the East Sea and Gwangyang with a planned frequency of five voyages each month. This launch marks a pivotal step towards more sustainable shipping practices in South Korea and beyond.
