On November 19, 2014, at 09:17 AM, a critical medevac operation was launched off the coast of Cape Town, highlighting the swift response capabilities of the South African search and rescue services. An Oryx helicopter from the SA Air Force's 22 Squadron was deployed to assist the 'Hellenic G', located approximately 11 nautical miles west of Robben Island, following a distress call regarding a 29-year-old Italian sailor who had sustained a serious head injury and lost consciousness. The incident was reported to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) on November 18. In response, instructions were given for the vessel to proceed towards Cape Town while a duty doctor from the Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) evaluated the patient's condition and provided treatment guidance to the ship's medic. Upon arriving at the scene, a rescue swimmer from the ASR and a Metro EMS paramedic were lowered from the helicopter onto the deck of the 'Hellenic G'.
