Historic Arrival: First U.S. Shale Gas Shipment Reaches the UK Amid Political Turmoil
(Reuters) – In a landmark event for the British energy landscape, the inaugural shipment of shale gas from the United States has docked in the UK, igniting a fierce political discussion surrounding fracking. On Tuesday, the impressive ‘Ineos Insight’ tanker navigated the Firth of Forth at dawn, where the sweet sound of a lone Scots piper welcomed it. The vessel was en route to the Grangemouth refinery, located just west of Edinburgh. However, turbulent Scottish weather thwarted the initial plans for unloading the contentious cargo, leaving a crowd of dignitaries waiting. As the debate over the viability and safety of fracking continues to escalate in Europe, this delivery marks a significant shift towards American energy dependence. Bureau Veritas Introduces Classifications for Groundbreaking Ethane-Powered Vessels
Bureau Veritas has achieved a significant milestone in maritime innovation by classing the first-ever ethane-powered vessel, the JS Ineos Insight. This ship marks the beginning of an exciting series of eight 27,500-cubic-meter Dragon-class vessels, currently under construction at Sinopacific in China and being developed for the Danish company, Evergas. Designed for versatile transportation, the JS Ineos Insight can deliver ethane, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), or liquefied natural gas (LNG). With the capability of utilizing ethane, LNG, or traditional diesel, this vessel aligns with modern aspirations for cleaner shipping fuels. Martial Claudepierre, business development manager at Bureau Veritas, commented on this advancement: "Burning ethane alongside LNG represents a significant leap forward in the adoption of eco-friendly fuels. Our collaboration with Evergas and the Danish Maritime Authority has been essential in ensuring that ethane usage complies with the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC) and does not compromise compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regulations." Initially designed to operate with dual-fuel LNG and diesel systems, the Dragon vessels are equipped with two 1,000-cubic-meter LNG tanks on deck, powering dual Wärtsilä 6L20 DF main engines that deliver a combined output of 2,112 kW, complemented by two shaft generators providing an additional 3,600 kW. The newly integrated option to utilize ethane is particularly strategic, as the vessels are set to facilitate the transport of ethane from the United States to the Ineos refineries in the United Kingdom.
