Significant Oil Spill Incident During Bunkering Operation Near Changi

Nov 01, 2024 09:57

On October 28, 2024, at 5:40 p.m., a notable oil spill was reported during a bunkering operation involving the tanker 'Pacific Spirit' (IMO: 9384083) and the vessel 'Ines Corrado'. The Marine Port Authority (MPA) was alerted to an overflow of approximately five tonnes of oil off the coast of Changi during this operation. In response, all bunkering activities were halted immediately. MPA response crafts deployed swiftly to the scene, utilizing dispersants to mitigate the spill. Authorities from relevant government agencies were also notified to monitor the shoreline for any potential oil sightings. Thankfully, navigational traffic remained unaffected by the incident. As of October 29, no traces of oil were detected at sea or along the shore surrounding the mishap area. To enhance containment efforts, a Current Buster was strategically positioned off Changi to capture any oil that might come to the surface. Additionally, Malaysian authorities have been alerted to assist in monitoring for oil sightings while the MPA continues its investigation. The 'Ines Corrado' was reported to be stationary at coordinates 01° 17' N 104° 00' E as of November 1.
