Paraná River Incident: Interlink Fortuity Engine Failure Causes Navigational Disruption

Dec 28, 2018 12:08

On December 23, 2018, at approximately 2:15 p.m., the bulk carrier 'Interlink Fortuity' encountered a critical engine failure while navigating the Paraná Las Palmas River. The vessel, which had departed from San Lorenzo and was loaded with an impressive 33,000 tonnes of maize, found itself immobilized along km 139 of the waterway due to the loss of power, preventing it from raising its anchors. Efforts to resolve the situation included the deployment of two tugs, 'Pampero' and 'Candela S', although these attempts were unsuccessful in moving the ship. It wasn't until the intervention of the Coast Guard that the vessel was finally extricated from its obstructive position on December 24 at 11:45 a.m. Once stabilized, the 'Interlink Fortuity' was anchored along the left margin of the Paraná River. After a brief hiatus, the vessel resumed its journey, arriving at the La Plata anchorage at 5:20 p.m. on December 25. The ship continued its voyage towards San Antonio, departing at 2:00 p.m. on December 26, with an estimated time of arrival set for January 4, 2019.
