Vessel Grounds in Mykonos Amid Stormy Weather
In a dramatic turn of events on the night of February 23, 2019, the cargo ship 'Irini,' carrying a crew of seven, including six Greek nationals, was dislodged from its moorings in Mykonos due to severe storm conditions. The vessel, which was loaded with 915 tons of gravel destined for unloading at the old port, ran aground on a sandy area in the Paleo Port. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries or water ingress as the ship grounded. The situation was swiftly managed by the tugboat 'Karapiperis,' which successfully refloated the 'Irini' in the afternoon of February 24. Following the refloating, the ship was safely returned to its berth in the old port. In response to the incident, the port authority detained the vessel pending inspection by the relevant classification society. A diver was subsequently called to assess the hull, and fortunately, no damage was identified.
