BHP Billiton Expands Towage Fleet with Delivery of Iron Corella at Port Hedland
BHP Billiton's towage operations at Port Hedland, located in Western Australia, recently marked a significant milestone with the arrival of the Iron Kestrel and Iron Corella. These two vessels represent the initial batch of a larger order consisting of six advanced RAstar class escort tugs. This move highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance towage services at the Port Hedland bulk export terminal, one of the busiest in the world by tonnage. In addition to this landmark delivery, Pilbara Marine Pty Ltd has also announced plans for the acquisition of six 32-meter Damen-built Rotortugs, as reported in MJ April 2017. The new tugs, designed by Robert Allan Ltd, are set to tackle the challenging environmental conditions faced in this key shipping area, which includes extreme air and water temperatures, airborne ore dust, strong currents, and gusty winds reaching 35 knots, alongside significant wave heights of 3 meters. With these investments, BHP Billiton is committed to bolstering its towage capabilities and ensuring safe operations in this demanding environment.
