Freighter 'Norderau' Grounded on River Trent: Recovery Efforts Underway
On January 16, 2018, the freighter 'Norderau' encountered a challenging situation while navigating the River Trent. The vessel was making its way from Derince to Flixborough, carrying a cargo of 2,957.5 tonnes of steel products, along with a crew of seven and two pilots, when it ran aground at approximately 7:30 p.m. The location of the grounding was noted as one mile west-northwest of Alkborough, specifically at latitude 53° 41' 37"N and longitude 000° 41' 43"W. Fortunately, there were no reported defects or pollution concerns related to the incident. In response, two tugs from Deans of Hull were deployed and arrived on January 17 at 7:00 a.m. to assist in the refloating efforts. The 'Norderau' was also carrying 35.6 tonnes of marine gas oil and 4,080 litres of lube oil, raising concerns about potential environmental impacts. Despite initial attempts at refloating the vessel, they were unsuccessful. As discussions about lightening the vessel to aid recovery took place, a meeting among the relevant authorities was scheduled for January 19 to determine the way forward. After several days of efforts, the tugs successfully refloated the 'Norderau' on January 22.
