Island Offshore Unveils Groundbreaking Gas-Powered Vessel: The Island Crusader

Jun 22, 2012 10:37

In a significant advancement for eco-friendly maritime operations, Island Offshore has officially taken delivery of the pioneering gas-powered offshore vessel, the 'Island Crusader'. This state-of-the-art UT 776 CDG vessel marks a milestone as the first of two such vessels ordered by the company, both set to operate in the North Sea. Designed for efficiency, the Island Crusader will serve critical transport, supply, and service roles, connecting onshore supply bases with offshore drilling sites. Its innovative hull lines are engineered to ensure exceptionally low fuel consumption across various operating draughts, highlighting the vessel's commitment to reducing environmental impact. Island Offshore emphasizes that the key to lowering emissions lies in decreasing fuel consumption for equivalent operational output. Transitioning to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a fuel source is a strategic move aimed at achieving even greater emissions reductions. Notably, the Island Crusader is the first offshore vessel integrated with burn gas engines, which enables a remarkable 90% reduction in Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions. Additionally, the vessel is designed to significantly lower Sulphur Oxide (SOx) and CO2 emissions. To ensure operational flexibility, the Island Crusader is also fitted with two diesel engines, allowing it to function effectively in scenarios where gas supply may be limited. This innovative vessel not only sets a new benchmark for offshore operations but also reinforces Island Offshore’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices.
