Island Condor Crowned Cleanest Vessel at Rotterdam This Century

Mar 09, 2016 10:13

In a significant milestone for sustainable maritime practices, the offshore vessel Island Condor has been recognized as the cleanest ship to dock at the Port of Rotterdam this century, scoring an impressive 94.9 out of 100 on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI). This accolade, made possible by the World Port Climate Initiative and available upon request from shipowners, emphasizes the commitment to environmentally friendly shipping operations. Owned by Island Offshore, the Island Condor has topped the ESI leaderboard, surpassing other notable vessels such as the tug Skandi Iceman, which scored 91.4, and the oil tanker Tarnvag, with an ESI score of 84.4. The Island Condor is a UT 776 CD-design Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV), specifically engineered and constructed under the DNV GL Clean Design notation. It incorporates advanced Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology that effectively reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by over 90%, converting harmful gases into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. This remarkable reduction in NOx emissions grants the vessel eligibility for an additional 10% discount on port tariffs at Rotterdam, complementing the existing 10% discount it already receives based on its high ESI rating. These financial benefits reflect the port's ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable shipping practices and reducing environmental impact.
