Lifeboat Responds to Capsized 'Braveheart' Fishing Vessel

Sep 02, 2020 13:38

On August 30, 2020, the St Davids all-weather lifeboat sprang into action after the Pembroke Dock-Rosslare ferry 'Isle of Inishmore' reported a capsized fishing boat, the 'Braveheart', approximately 150 miles from its home port in southern Ireland. The alert at 4:47 p.m. triggered the volunteer crew's response, as the capsized vessel was located nine miles from the lifeboat station. The lifeboat 'Norah Wortley' was dispatched to investigate the 20-foot Orkney Longliner, after the ferry crew had identified its black and blue hull drifting in the waters. Upon changing course to assess the situation, the crew of the 'Isle of Inishmore' informed HM Coastguard, which led to one of their rescue boats being deployed. When the 'Norah Wortley' arrived on the scene, the crew made a thorough inspection and found no individuals aboard the fishing boat. Investigations revealed that the 'Braveheart' had become dislodged from its mooring amidst the turbulent conditions of Storm Ellen on August 21. Despite the crew's multiple attempts to right the vessel, it continued to capsize. They reattached the mooring buoy for enhanced visibility and returned to their station by 8 p.m. Subsequently, the owners of the 'Braveheart' were contacted and arrangements were made for independent salvage operations.
