Working Conditions Aboard the Jag-Aabha

A tragic accident occurred on June 1, 2026, when Chief Officer Harsha Gopalan Rajan, aged 30 and hailing from Perumbakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, sadly died after collapsing inside an oil tank aboard the vessel 'Jag Aabha'. The incident took place at approximately 9:30 a.m. in the Slop Port Area of the Arabian Sea, during routine tank cleaning operations. Witnesses report that Rajan suddenly felt dizzy, leading to his unfortunate fall into the storage tank. Immediate action was taken by fellow crew members, who swiftly worked with a rescue team to retrieve him. Despite being rushed to the ship's hospital for initial medical attention, Rajan did not regain consciousness. Following the incident, the Yellow Gate Police in Mumbai were alerted. His body was ultimately disembarked at Bhaucha Ghatta on June 3 and transferred to J.J. Hospital for an autopsy. The authorities have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death, although it is not currently considered suspicious.

On December 6, 2016, during a routine MARPOL inspection in the Port of Brunsbüttel, the local water police uncovered serious violations involving the vessel 'Jag Aabha.' Authorities promptly charged the First Officer after revealing records indicating 18 unauthorized disposals of food waste along the West African coastline. The violations occurred while the ship was reportedly anchored and not on its active route. The incident prompted immediate notification to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. Further scrutiny of the vessel's oil record book exposed additional discrepancies, leading to charges against the Chief Officer as well. Subsequently, on December 7, the 'Jag Aabha' resumed its journey, continuing from Antwerp towards Canakkale.

In a significant development in the maritime industry, a new charter agreement has been established with the International Oil Company (IOC). The terms of the deal stipulate a daily rate of $16,000, with options available for both sides to extend the charter for up to three years. This move marks an important step in enhancing operational capabilities for IOC as it continues its endeavors in the oil sector.
