Coast Guard Conducts Successful Medevac from Jamaica Bay near Dutch Harbor

Aug 21, 2013 09:44

On August 20, 2013, a crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak utilized an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to execute a critical medevac operation for an ill crew member aboard the bulk carrier 'Jamaica Bay.' The incident unfolded approximately 92 miles west of Dutch Harbor in the Bering Sea region. Early that morning, the watch center in Juneau received an urgent request for assistance from the vessel's crew. At the time of the medevac request, 'Jamaica Bay' was situated more than 356 miles from Dutch Harbor, initially placing the vessel outside the operational range of the Dolphin helicopter. In response, watchstanders skillfully directed the bulk carrier to change course toward Dutch Harbor. Once within range, the Dolphin crew promptly launched from Dutch Harbor, successfully hoisting the distressed 37-year-old Chinese mariner, who was experiencing severe abdominal pain. Following the extraction, the helicopter transported the mariner back to Dutch Harbor, where emergency medical personnel awaited to provide urgent care. This successful medevac highlights the Coast Guard's dedication and ability to respond swiftly even in challenging conditions.
