Qatar University Receives Advanced Research Vessel from Freire Shipbuilding
Qatar University has officially welcomed Janan, a cutting-edge research ship built by Freire Shipbuilding in Vigo, Spain, marking a significant milestone for marine research in the Arabian Gulf. Named after the picturesque island situated in the western expanse of the Qatari peninsula, Janan was generously donated to the university by H.H. the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. This innovative vessel will play a pivotal role at the university’s Environmental Studies Center (ESC), driving essential marine environmental research not only in Qatar but throughout the Gulf region. Equipped with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Janan is capable of conducting a wide range of surveys to monitor seismic activity, seabed shifts, and marine radioactivity. The ship is poised to maintain and enhance a comprehensive database aimed at identifying and analyzing crucial marine conditions. With a length of 42.8 meters and a breadth of 10 meters, this remarkable vessel can undertake expeditions lasting up to 21 days and comfortably accommodate 30 technicians, scientists, and researchers.
