Cargo Vessel Allision in Gemlik Port: Investigation Underway

Mar 10, 2025 10:16

On February 27, 2025, a maritime incident occurred in Gemlik as the cargo ship 'Friends RS 1' (IMO: 7382665) collided with the vessel 'Jessica B' while attempting to maneuver out of the port. The allision took place as 'Friends RS 1' was departing stern first, resulting in an impact against 'Jessica B' at its berth, specifically striking the port aft side. The impact caused a puncture in 'Jessica B's' starboard side, which was above the waterline, leading to the release of ballast water into the sea under pressure. Local authorities promptly initiated a damage assessment at the scene to evaluate the situation. At 8:50 AM UTC, 'Friends RS 1' anchored off Gemlik at coordinates 40° 25' N, 029° 05' E. In light of the incident, an investigation has been started to determine the potential environmental impact and assess any pollution risks in the surrounding waters. The 'Jessica B' successfully berthed in Tuzla on March 4, while 'Friends RS 1' faced detention following the investigation and remained moored off Gemlik as of March 10.
