The Jette-Saj: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On January 10, 2013, at approximately 6 p.m., the dredger 'Jette Saj' tragically capsized and submerged off the coast of Lindø while preparing to offload a cargo of sludge. In this daunting situation, a crane operator found himself trapped in the dredger’s glass enclosure as it quickly went under. Fortunately, the vessel’s master managed to escape from the wheelhouse and made it onto the hull. Meanwhile, the crane operator's quick thinking led him to break a window, allowing him to swim to safety. Both individuals were promptly transported to Odense Hospital for evaluation. In response to the sinking, the sheerleg crane 'Samson' was summoned from Aarhus the following day, January 11, to assist in the wreck recovery. The Jette Saj was partially submerged, posing environmental concerns due to the presence of 8,000 liters of diesel fuel and hundreds of liters of lubricating and hydraulic oil onboard, some of which had unfortunately leaked into the surrounding waters. To address the situation, the Emergency Management Agency of South Jutland was activated to manage the oil spill containment. The salvage operation proceeded effectively with no further leaks reported, and the vessel was eventually surfaced next to Nordfyn. The next step involved towing the wreck through a channel back to the Lindø yard for further assessment and repair.
