Pilot Injured After Gangway Collapse Leads to Arrest of 'Jin Hai Hua'

Mar 15, 2024 12:35

In a significant development for maritime safety, Captain Shishir Nishikant Patange, a pilot at the Deendayal Port Authority, has successfully obtained an arrest warrant against the vessel 'Jin Hai Hua' following a severe accident. The incident occurred on March 4, 2024, as Captain Patange was assigned to undock the ship from the Deendayal Port Jetty. While navigating the gangway to board the vessel, it unexpectedly collapsed, causing him to fall to the wharf and resulting in critical injuries to his left wrist, which suffered severe crushing and fracturing. Medical professionals have indicated that due to the extent of his injuries, he faces permanent mobility loss in his left hand, hampering his ability to continue his duties as a pilot. Captain Patange has filed a personal injury claim amounting to $822,000 against the 'Jin Hai Hua' and its owners, citing negligence related to the inadequate maintenance and monitoring of the gangway as the root cause of the accident. This claim encompasses compensation for pain and suffering, anticipated lost income leading up to his retirement at age 65, as well as legal expenses and interest, with the possibility of increasing the claim amount as he further assesses the full impact of his injuries. Additionally, the Deendayal Port Authority has acknowledged its responsibility due to Patange's injury occurring while on duty. Concerned about the potential for the vessel to leave the port after investigators conclude their work, Captain Patange sought to arrest the ship as a precautionary measure. The incarceration of the 'Jin Hai Hua' is expected to be lifted once security is provided to the court by the vessel’s protection and indemnity insurer, UK P&I Club. Following the incident, the ship was relocated to Kandla anchorage on March 9, where it has remained stationary as of March 15.
