Bar Pilot's Heroic Rescue After Falling Overboard

Mar 10, 2012 14:10

On the morning of March 5, 2012, a daring incident unfolded as Bar Pilot Captain Deb Dempsey plunged into the Pacific Ocean while transitioning from the merchant vessel 'Navios Ionian' to the bar pilot boat 'Chinook'. Quick thinking and effective execution by the pilot crew ensured that Dempsey was retrieved from the treacherous waters in just a matter of minutes. Promptly, the crew initiated their well-practiced rescue procedures and reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard for assistance. At 1:50 a.m., the team aboard the Chinook informed the Coast Guard about Dempsey's situation, detailing that she had activated both her smoke signal and a strobe light for visibility. The Coast Guard's Sector Columbia River responded swiftly with a call at 2:02 a.m., reporting that Dempsey had been successfully brought back onboard the Chinook. Although an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Astoria was on standby, it was not needed as she was recovered before takeoff. Additionally, two 47-foot motor lifeboats from Station Cape Disappointment were dispatched to escort the Chinook safely across the bar and into Hammond, where they handed Dempsey over to local EMS technicians for further care.
