Emergencies at Sea: Successful Rescue Near Christmas Island
On November 21, 2010, the U.S. Coast Guard and the vessel "Hoegh Kobe" collaborated to rescue a distressed sailing vessel approximately 276 miles north of Christmas Island, located in the Republic of Kiribati. The operation was initiated when the Coast Guard watchstanders from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received a distress signal from a 406 megahertz personal locating beacon from the "Currandera" at around 1 p.m. on November 20. Responding swiftly, an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Barbers Point was dispatched to locate the compromised vessel. The captain of the "Currandera" informed rescuers that his sail had been demasted and there was only 12 hours of fuel left on board. While the fishing vessel "Insong" was the first to respond to the emergency, it was the AMVER vessel "Hoegh Kobe" that reached the scene more quickly, arriving at approximately 4:15 p.m. on November 21. They provided crucial support by delivering 58 gallons of diesel fuel and a can of lube oil. Additionally, the Coast Guard aircraft dropped a dewatering pump to assist the stranded mariners. Coast Guard and Hoegh Kobe Join Forces to Rescue Vessel Currandera Near Christmas Island
On November 21, 2010, the U.S. Coast Guard's search and rescue (SAR) teams, alongside the AMVER-manned vessel Hoegh Kobe, successfully responded to a distress call from the sailing vessel Currandera, situated 276 miles north of Christmas Island, in the Republic of Kiribati. The rescue operation began unfolding when watchstanders at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received a distress signal via a 406 megahertz personal locator beacon around 1 p.m. on November 20. The vessel's master reported critical issues, stating that the Currandera had suffered a demasted sail and was perilously low on fuel with only 12 hours left before running out. In response to the emergency, the Coast Guard launched an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Barbers Point, tasked with locating and assisting the stranded mariners. Although the fishing vessel Insong was the first to respond to the situation, it was the Hoegh Kobe that arrived on the scene with impressive speed. The Hoegh Kobe crew provided essential aid, delivering 58 gallons of diesel fuel and a can of lubricant oil to the distressed sailors around 4:15 p.m. on November 21. Additionally, the Coast Guard C-130 aircraft contributed to the mission by dropping a dewatering pump to further assist the Currandera. This collaborative effort illustrates the dedication and swift action of maritime rescue teams in critical situations.
