On January 30, 2017, at 4:19 PM, the CROSS Gris Nez received a distress call from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Cape Verde regarding a French sailboat in peril. The 'Focus', a 12.50-meter yacht registered in Cherbourg, was reported to be 500 nautical miles west of Cape Verde, battling significant water ingress as it made its way to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. In response, CROSS promptly issued a Mayday relay to nearby vessels, urging them to extend their assistance to the ailing 'Focus'. In a swift action, the CROSS dispatched the Falcon 50, a navy aircraft from the Dakar Base, which took off at 11:12 PM and reached the zone by 03:18 AM on January 31, following a technical stop in Cape Verde for refueling. During this time, CROSS also established communication with the cargo vessel 'Liberta', which adjusted its course to assist the troubled yacht.
