NTSB Releases Detailed Findings on 'Jack Edwards' and 'Julie C' Collision in Guyana

Jan 09, 2026 13:41

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has made public its comprehensive investigation report concerning the maritime collision involving the offshore vessel 'Jack Edwards' and the cargo ship 'Julie C' (IMO: 9530008) that occurred off the coast of Georgetown, Guyana, on March 17, 2024, at approximately 10:53 PM local time. At the time of the incident, the 'Jack Edwards' was inbound to Georgetown when it unexpectedly veered portside, colliding with the outbound 'Julie C' at coordinates 06°51.99’ N, 058°08.18’ W. Following the collision, the 'Jack Edwards' managed to make its way to Georgetown under its own power, while the 'Julie C' made a brief return to port before continuing its voyage as planned. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by two crew members aboard the 'Jack Edwards' were reported to be minor. However, the incident resulted in a substantial environmental impact, with approximately 2,200 gallons of diesel fuel leaking into the surrounding waters. Damage estimates for both vessels reached around $1.025 million. The NTSB's investigation concluded that the primary cause of this maritime mishap was attributed to the normalization of degradation within the vessel’s steering system, which severely impaired the ability to maneuver effectively. This led to an erroneous transfer of steering and engine controls from the main navigation hub as the 'Jack Edwards' approached the 'Julie C', ultimately resulting in a fleeting loss of control.
