On March 11, 2023, at approximately 0600 LT, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Riga received a distress signal from the general cargo vessel Kadri. The freighter, located about 8 miles off the Irben Strait, was facing severe weather conditions while traveling from Tallinn to Liepaja in ballast. The vessel requested urgent medical assistance for two Russian crew members who had sustained serious injuries. After consulting with medical professionals, a decision was made to conduct a rescue operation. A helicopter from the nearby Air Force Base was dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, upon its arrival, the medical team confirmed that one of the injured seamen had succumbed to his injuries, while the other was promptly transported to a hospital in Ventspils for further treatment. The maritime community mourns this tragic loss.
