On February 3, 2018, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully conducted a medevac operation approximately 40 miles south of Galveston, Texas, involving a crew member aboard the vessel Kassos. The captain of the Kassos alerted Coast Guard Station Galveston watchstanders about a serious incident when a 38-year-old mariner sustained a broken leg. In response, the Galveston station promptly informed Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston, where the situation was assessed with the assistance of the duty flight surgeon, leading to a medevac recommendation. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Houston was deployed for the operation. The injured crewmember was hoisted to safety and subsequently transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he was reported to be in stable condition. At the time of the rescue, sea conditions included 5-foot waves and winds reaching 17 mph, underscoring the challenging environment faced by the Coast Guard during the operation.
