Fishermen of Atlantic Charger Rescued; Crew Now Heading Home

Sep 24, 2015 12:35

The beleaguered crew of the f/v 'Atlantic Charger,' who faced a harrowing experience at sea, are now on their way home to Harbour Grace, expected to arrive on September 29. They were rescued and transferred to the vessel 'Kathsheshuk II' after being picked up from the Greenlandic f/v 'Paamiut' on the morning of September 21. The 'Paamiut' was the first ship to reach the stranded fishermen after their vessel, loaded with turbot, began sinking off the coast of Frobisher Bay, close to Resolution Island and Iqaluit in Nunavut. While fishing for turbot in Davis Strait, the 'Atlantic Charger' encountered trouble and began taking on water. The crew issued a distress call around noon, and within a mere ten minutes, they were entering their liferaft as the situation escalated. They endured several arduous hours adrift in the choppy waters near the entrance of Frobisher Bay. A majority of the fishermen hail from New World Island, although they operate out of Twillingate. On September 20, a CP 140 Aurora patrol aircraft, dispatched from Greenwood, was the initial responder to the distress signal. Canadian Forces Captain Jennifer Bass received the emergency call from the Joint Rescue Command Centre in Halifax shortly after takeoff. The plane spotted flares launched by the crew and identified the sinking vessel about 200 kilometers southeast of Baffin Island. Upon arrival, the crew observed the 'Atlantic Charger' leaning to starboard with its stern submerged. By the time the patrol aircraft returned, the vessel had completely disappeared beneath the waves, leaving behind only the orange liferaft bobbing in the turbulent sea. A crew member had managed to signal their location with a yellow flag. Later, a Hercules aircraft from Greenwood joined the operation, successfully dropping a radio to the stranded fishermen at 2:30 a.m., followed by supplies to aid the crew. The bulk ore carrier 'Arctic' arrived at the scene shortly after, but its efforts to conduct the rescue were complicated by its size and the challenging sea conditions. Ultimately, it was the 'Arctic' that facilitated the evacuation of the crew from the perilous situation.
