Kona Trader Encounters Grounding Incident Near Paranaguá

Mar 20, 2018 09:53

On March 15, 2018, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the bulk carrier Kona Trader, which had set sail from Portland, Oregon on February 15 with a hefty cargo of 62,000 tonnes of potassium chloride, found itself grounded in the Galheta Canal. The vessel was en route to the Fospar pier located in the Pontal do Sul region of the Port of Paranaguá when it ran aground about 500 meters from shore. The grounding incident occurred between buoys 9 and 10, critical markers for navigating into the Port of Paranaguá. Efforts to refloat the Kona Trader were initially unsuccessful, despite the assistance of seven tugs that attempted to dislodge the ship from its precarious position. Following nearly ten hours of stranded conditions, the tide began to rise, allowing tugs to return to the scene at 11 p.m. Finally, at 1:50 a.m. on March 16, the Kona Trader was successfully refloated and subsequently anchored in the Bay of Paranaguá for an investigation into the grounding. The vessel continued its journey and officially docked at the port on March 18 at 9:40 p.m. The incident garnered media attention, with Spanish language sources providing detailed reports along with visual coverage of the event.
