In a significant milestone for Pakistan's energy sector, the inaugural LNG carrier, Golar Kevin, arrived at the Pakistan GasPort Consortium Limited (PGPC) terminal at Port Qasim, Karachi, on Friday, delivering a substantial 70,000 tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The supply comes from the renowned global commodity trader Gunvor, sourced directly from Nigeria. Following the vessel's docking, immediate commissioning tests will commence, setting the stage for an anticipated increase of 600 mmcfd to the National Grid in the coming days. This development marks a noteworthy progression since November 20, 2017, when then-Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi inaugurated the second LNG terminal at Port Qasim, developed at an investment of Rs 50 billion. Gunvor's winning bid in January 2017 demonstrated their competitive edge, offering LNG at a price indexed at 11.62% of Brent crude oil for short-term supply over five years. This recent shipment represents Gunvor's second five-year contract after their initial deal signed in early 2016, with the commitment to provide 60 ships over the duration. Gunvor initially secured their foothold in the Pakistani market by winning the first LNG supply contract in May 2016 with Pakistan State Oil for 100 mmcfd of LNG. As PGPC gears up for more operational capacities, this LNG delivery paves the way for enhanced energy stability in the region.
