Maritime Incident in the Oste Estuary: 'Transcapricorn' and 'Eendracht' Collide
In the early hours of November 26, 2015, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a maritime accident occurred in the Oste Estuary involving the cargo vessels 'Transcapricorn' and 'Eendracht'. The 'Transcapricorn', which was on its journey from Rotterdam to Tornio, collided with the 'Eendracht' while both vessels had pilot assistance. The 'Eendracht', tasked with transporting project cargo to the North Sea from the Elbe, inexplicably veered off its course near buoy 52, crossing into the navigational fairway and directly into the path of the approaching 'Transcapricorn', which was primarily loaded with scrap metal. As the situation unfolded, the 'Eendracht' attempted to alter its trajectory to port while the 'Transcapricorn' sharply turned to starboard in a bid to avert the impending crash. Unfortunately, a collision was unavoidable, leading to the two vessels striking each other at their sterns outside the designated fairway. The aftermath saw the 'Transcapricorn' turning and getting ensnared on the southern shore of the Elbe beneath the Oste estuary. In response, the tugboat 'Wulf 7' along with additional tugboats were dispatched to assist in freeing the stranded ship. Notably, the anti-pollution vessel 'Neuwerk' and the lifeboat 'Hermann Helms' also joined the operation to ensure the safety and environmental protection following the collision. After the incident, the 'Transcapricorn' was anchored at Neufeld-West roads for assessment, while the 'Eendracht', after completing its anchor stop at Neufeld Roads, proceeded towards the Mützelfeldt Yard in Cuxhaven around 2:30 p.m. for necessary repairs. This incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and potential dangers of maritime navigation.
