The impressive oceanographic icebreaker 'Kronprins Haakon' has officially joined the fleet, having been successfully delivered by Fincantieri to the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway. This cutting-edge vessel, designed to navigate polar waters, was handed over at the Vard Langsten yard after final testing and preparations followed its construction at Fincantieri’s Integrated shipyards in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano. With a gross tonnage of 9,000 tons, the 'Kronprins Haakon' boasts a length exceeding 100 meters, a width of 21 meters, and a top speed of 15 knots, enabling it to traverse ice conditions up to one meter thick independently. Notably built with eco-friendly criteria, this modern icebreaker minimizes environmental impact while significantly reducing underwater noise levels, which is paramount for conducting studies on marine life, including fish and mammals.
