Engine Malfunction Strikes Bulk Carrier Karaagac Off Chennai

Jul 09, 2016 12:20

The bulk carrier "Karaagac," which embarked from Chennai on June 1, 2016, en route to Kakinda, faced significant engine troubles shortly after departure. As a result, the vessel was anchored at the outer port of Chennai until July 2. Indian Maritime Authorities deemed "Karaagac" a threat to navigational safety and requested its relocation from the anchorage. Complicating matters further, on June 24, authorities had ordered the vessel's arrest due to outstanding crew wages totaling $59,000 and issues regarding its seaworthiness. A subsequent inspection by an ITF inspector revealed several serious deficiencies on board, though it appears these issues have since been addressed.
