Emergency Evacuation as Patrol Boat Takes On a Dangerous List in Sula
On June 9, 2019, a critical incident occurred involving the patrol boat "Barentshav," which developed a concerning list of six to seven degrees to its port side while docked at Vegsund Slip in Sula. The local police were alerted at 2:23 p.m., prompting an immediate response from emergency services. By 2:40 p.m., nearly all 30 crew members had been safely evacuated from the vessel. The lifeboat "DNV II" was dispatched to provide assistance, alongside both the Ålesund and Sula fire departments, who arrived on scene by 3 p.m. By 4 p.m., police confirmed that all personnel aboard the "Barentshav" had been accounted for. On June 10, specialists began investigations to determine the cause of the listing. Preliminary assessments indicated that a failure of hydraulic supports on the starboard side of the floating dock might be to blame. Following the evacuation, the Norwegian Armed Forces, who had chartered the vessel from Remøy Management in Fosnavåg, commenced an evaluation to check the ship's watertight integrity and inspect for potential openings in the hull. Remøy's inspection team completed their evaluation inside the ship on June 10, reporting that it had stabilized. The "Barentshav" typically operates with a complement of around 18 military and civilian crew members and had only recently arrived at Vegsund Slip on June 3 for scheduled maintenance work. This state-of-the-art ship, part of the Norwegian Coastguard fleet, is instrumental in various critical operations including fisheries oversight, sea rescues, law enforcement, Customs inspections, and environmental monitoring within Norway's territorial waters. The visit, which lasted from June 19 to June 21, 2012, coincided with the 'LNG – the Norwegian Experience' conference. This event brought together experts from the German-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, Innovation Norway, and DNV Germany to discuss advancements and experiences related to LNG use in maritime operations.
Barentshav Initiates Repairs After Docking in Harstad
The fishing vessel 'Barentshav' has recently been docked in Harstad for necessary repairs following an incident that prompted an investigation on the morning of December 8. The lifeboat 'Skomvær III' assisted in the evaluation process, with experts from both the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and the Norwegian Veritas conducting thorough inspections onboard. Divers discovered three significant holes in the ballast tanks, alongside additional hull damages that required urgent attention. After the inspection and surveys were completed, the 'Barentshav' was able to navigate to Svolvaer under its own power to enter drydock for repairs. As of now, the duration of the repair work remains uncertain, but it could span several weeks. The cause behind the vessel's grounding remains unclear; however, it occurred while responding to an assignment. The 'Barentshav' was tasked with investigating a peculiar light spotted in the waters off Andenes, which was later identified as an LED light utilized by local fishermen to locate their aquaculture farms.
