On the afternoon of August 28, 2024, the Coastguard ship 'Bergen' successfully towed the remnants of the Viking ship replica 'Naddoddur' to the quay in Måløy, Norway. This operation followed a tragic incident in Stadhavet on the evening of August 27, where the vessel capsized, resulting in the death of one woman. The 'Naddoddur,' a nine-meter long boat crafted in the traditional Viking style from the Faroe Islands, was designed with two masts. At the time of the incident, there were six individuals aboard, including four Swiss citizens, one person from the Faroe Islands, and one from the USA. They encountered perilous conditions with wind speeds reaching up to 40 knots and wave heights of five meters, which ultimately led to the boat overturning. In response to the tragedy, local authorities have initiated an investigation, with two witnesses interviewed on August 28 as part of the inquiry. The lifeboat 'Idar Ulstein,' along with an offshore vessel and the 'Bergen' itself, undertook extensive search efforts for the boat and for the last missing individual.
