Collision at Sea: Patrol Vessel Strikes Purse Seiner in Finnmark Waters
In a noteworthy maritime incident, the patrol vessel 'Sortland' collided with the purse seiner 'Gerda Marie' (IMO: 9762259) on October 30, 2025, at 11:03 PM. The collision occurred in Sørøysundet near Sørøya in Finnmark during a fisheries inspection, resulting in a noticeable dent on the starboard side of 'Gerda Marie' due to the impact from 'Sortland's' bulb bow. At the time of the incident, both vessels were navigating at a low speed in a crossing course, leading to the purse seiner being struck amidships. Fortunately, both vessels sustained only minor damage; 'Sortland' incurred slight damage to its bulb bow while there were no injuries reported among the crew of either vessel. Following the collision, 'Sortland' made its way back to Sortland, arriving on November 2, while 'Gerda Marie' docked in Torangsvag on November 4. Norwegian Patrol Boat Monitors Chinese Container Ship Linked to Pipeline Investigation
On October 16, 2023, at 4 a.m., the Norwegian patrol vessel KV 'Sortland' began tracking the Chinese container ship 'Newnew Polar Bear' (IMO: 9313204), which is currently under investigation for its potential involvement in damage to a gas pipeline in the Gulf of Finland. This close observation lasted approximately 15 hours as the vessel navigated along the western coastline of Norway. Finnish authorities, on October 17, announced that they are examining the 'Newnew Polar Bear', alongside the Russian-flagged vessel 'Sevmorput', among other ships, that were in the vicinity when a Baltic Sea pipeline sustained damage on October 8, likely due to external factors thought to be deliberate in nature. Having departed the Baltic Sea on October 16, the 'Newnew Polar Bear' channels into the North Sea, continuing its journey northward along Norway's coast. The 'Sortland' maintained its watch until about 7:15 p.m. GMT when the container ship, traveling from St. Petersburg to Tianjin, was approximately 43 miles northwest of Bergen, with an estimated time of arrival on November 16.
