Disabled Trawler 'Kvitungen' Rescued Off Bjørnøya
On January 28, 2017, the trawler 'Kvitungen' encountered a serious mechanical issue while navigating the Hopen Deep, located east of Bjørnøya. The vessel suffered propulsion difficulties, likely due to its propeller being entangled in a fishing net. In response to the emergency, the Norwegian Coastguard's 'Barentshav' was dispatched to provide assistance; however, the patrol boat took a full day to cover the 280 nautical miles to reach the stranded trawler. After dropping off supplies at Bjørnøya, 'Barentshav' headed for the crab fishing vessel. In the early hours of January 29, the Coastguard successfully arrived at 'Kvitungen,' beginning the towing operation at 7:30 AM. The convoy made its way toward Båtsfjord in Finnmark, with an anticipated arrival set for the morning of January 31. The weather conditions were generally favorable at first, but as the evening approached, strong gales and heavy snow began to complicate the operation. Fishing Vessel 'Kvitungen' Becomes Stuck on Tromsø Bridge
In the early hours of December 23, 2014, at approximately 4 a.m., the fishing vessel 'Kvitungen' found itself lodged against the structural pillars of Tromsø Bridge due to a mechanical failure. The incident caused the vessel to be trapped against three of the bridge's supports. Emergency response was swift, with the lifeboat 'Gideon' arriving on the scene; however, it was unable to extricate the 'Kvitungen' from its precarious position. Subsequently, the tugboat 'Lupus' was deployed to assist in freeing the vessel from the bridge. Remarkably, all 18 crew members aboard the 'Kvitungen' were unharmed during this incident.
