Filipino Crew Member on Bulk Carina Tests Positive for COVID-19 at VO Chidambaranar Port
A significant event unfolded at VO Chidambaranar Port Trust (VOCPT) on June 15, 2020, when a Filipino crew member aboard the Bulk Carina was confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19. This marked the first recorded case of a crew member on a cargo vessel arriving at an Indian port while discharging cargo. The Bulk Carina was at VOCPT to unload a consignment of coal when the situation escalated. Port authorities swiftly took action by securing the gangway, preventing disembarkation until further clarity could be established regarding the ship's operational status. Initially, on June 15, the Bulk Carina was cleared for port entry as no health issues had been reported among the crew at that time. However, on June 17, a crew member began to show symptoms consistent with COVID-19, including a fever. The ship's captain took immediate action by isolating the symptomatic crew member and promptly notifying the port authorities. Health officials boarded the vessel to conduct testing, leading to the suspension of cargo operations. The Bulk Carina was subsequently relocated to a designated berth for a mandated 14-day quarantine. The affected crew member was sent to a quarantine facility for further evaluation and, following positive confirmation of the virus, was transferred to an isolation center for treatment. Meanwhile, the remaining Filipino crew members are under close monitoring to ensure their health and safety. In response to the incident, thorough disinfection protocols have been implemented for the vessel and the surrounding area, with efforts being conducted daily to maintain a safe environment.
