The ferry, which was slated to depart at 4:20 p.m., encountered technical issues around 5 p.m. while operating between Lensvik and Hasselvika. A diesel leak prompted the crew to turn back to Trondheim for safety reasons. Initially running on one engine instead of two, the vessel's compromised performance raised concerns for passenger safety. In response, Norled, the ferry’s operating company, swiftly arranged alternative transportation options for all passengers impacted by this disruption.

On September 20, 2011, the ferry 'Ladejarl' faced significant technical issues, rendering it out of service. Compounding the situation, the backup vessel 'Agdenes' also experienced mechanical troubles, leaving Kystekspressens route between Kristiansund and Trondheim with just one operational ferry. Trouble emerged early in the day when the starboard engine failed to start due to suspected electronics malfunction just before the scheduled 08:00 a.m. departure from Kristiansund. Although a technician was located in Sandnessjøen to address the issue, he wouldn’t arrive in Trondheim until 8 p.m. In a bid to maintain service, 'Ladejarl' managed to set sail from Kristiansund to Trondheim using only a single engine, with no passengers onboard.
