On the evening of October 18, 2020, a heartbreaking event unfolded off the coast of Lavrio when the crew of the 'Kingfisher D' sought urgent medical assistance for their 47-year-old Master, who had lost consciousness upon the vessel's arrival from Bejaia. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, the Master was pronounced dead upon arrival at shore. Preliminary assessments suggest that a heart attack or stroke could be the likely cause of death. In light of this tragic incident, the Central Port Authority of Lavrio initiated a thorough investigation, ordering a necropsy at the Forensic Medicine Service in Piraeus. As a precautionary measure, the vessel's departure was halted due to its failure to meet the minimum crew requirements for safe operation. As of October 20, the bulk carrier continued to remain anchored at Lavrio, raising concerns among the shipping community.
