Cargo Vessel 'Lady Sham' Rescued After Engine Failure in Aegean Sea

Jan 03, 2020 12:31

On January 1, 2020, the cargo ship 'Lady Sham', carrying a crew of 14, encountered a critical engine failure while navigating the Aegean Sea between the islands of Rhodes and Karpasos. The vessel, en route from Bejaia to Tripoli with an estimated time of arrival on January 3, found itself adrift in the treacherous waters. By January 3, authorities noted that the ship continued to drift westward toward Karpathos while closely monitored by the Greek Coast Guard. A significant breakthrough occurred when the Greek tugboat 'Christos XXVII' (IMO: 7729710) intervened approximately 11 miles southwest of Rhodes. The tug successfully towed the 'Lady Sham' and anchored her safely off the coast of Rhodes on the morning of January 4. Fortunately, there was no report of marine pollution associated with this incident. Following the salvage operation, the Central Port Authority of Rhodes prohibited the 'Lady Sham' from departing until necessary repairs were completed and a class certificate was issued by the relevant maritime classification societies. To facilitate the repairs, the tug 'Christos XXXIV' was designated for the job, with the towage expected to commence on January 15 and an estimated time of arrival for repairs at Piraeus set for January 17.
